Saïd Business School and Pembroke College are recruiting an Associate Professor of Management Studies. At Oxford Saïd the rank of Associate Professor includes faculty that would elsewhere be considered of Assistant or Associate Professor rank. Therefore, the School welcomes applications from early career candidates (i.e., scholars who have recently completed or will very soon complete their PhD), postdoctoral researchers (i.e., scholars who are currently in a postdoc position in a business school), and tenure-track faculty members. The position is tenable from 1 September 2026 or at a different date by negotiation.
The position is associated with a tutorial fellowship at Pembroke College.
The post is part of the Organisation Studies group, which includes faculty in Management, Organisational Behaviour, and Organisation Studies. We are inviting applications from those with a background in Management Studies, broadly defined, who are committed to a programme of intellectually rigorous and relevant scholarship in management, management studies, organization studies or organisational behaviour that is publishable in top academic management journals. Oxford Saïd expects its faculty members to publish in the very best journals in business, which are considered to be those on the Financial Times academic journals list.
Members of the Organisation Studies group conduct research at the individual, organisational, industry, and field levels. Focal topics have recently included legitimacy and social evaluations, transformation leadership and change implementation, professionals’ career transitions, as well as workplace equity, diversity and inclusion. An important focus of the group is leadership and its challenges: managing competing expectations and goals, mental health in leadership roles, and the distinctive obstacles and opportunities for women in leadership. Group members also study the emotional aspects of work and organisations, and processes of individual and organisational resilience and growth.
The group’s research has traditionally primarily relied on qualitative methods, with particular strengths in narrative and a variety of ethnographic methods. It is building increasing capacity in experimental and other quantitative methods, mirroring broader efforts across the School. Research sites are diverse and include professional service firms, multinational corporations, healthcare organisations, and hybrid, mission driven organisations.
In terms of teaching, you will be expected to contribute to the School’s undergraduate, graduate and executive programmes with a particular focus on the MBA and Executive MBA programmes and the group’s core courses in organisational behaviour, leadership and management. Teaching experience in negotiations, high-performance teamwork and transformation leadership is desirable.
If you would like to discuss this post and find out more about joining the academic community at Oxford, please contact Professor Michael Smets (michael.smets@sbs.ox.ac.uk) who will also be available for informal conversations at the Academy of Management meeting in Copenhagen. Questions regarding life at Pembroke College should be directed to Professor Eamonn Molloy, Tutorial Fellow in Management Studies, Pembroke College (eamonn.molloy@pmb.ox.ac.uk) or Dr Nicholas Cole, Senior Research Fellow, Pembroke College (nicholas.cole@pmb.ox.ac.uk). All enquiries will be treated in strict confidence and will not form part of the selection decision.
To apply, please visit Job Details and click the 'Apply Now' button. We recommend that candidates view the full Job Description document attached above the 'Apply Now' button to ensure they are clear on their suitability for the role before submitting an application.
The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on Monday8th of September 2025
Essential Selection criteria
Hold a doctorate in Management or a relevant adjacent and closely related discipline. Regardless of discipline of doctorate, the research programme must be very clearly relevant to and contributing to the Management Studies discipline
Have an excellent track record - commensurate with career stage - of high quality publications in highly ranked, peer reviewed academic journals in management, organisation studies, organisational behaviour, and/or other appropriate business disciplines (i.e., those on the Financial Times academic journal list), and have a strong and promising pipeline of research under review (ideally past first round) at top journals
Have an outstanding programme of rigorous and relevant research that addresses important and interesting issues pertinent to the management studies discipline. This research should be underway, as well as planned, and have a very high potential to lead to publications in highly ranked, peer reviewed academic journals in business/management, as well as the potential to inform and have an impact on business practice
Be willing and able to teach, supervise, and assess high-achieving and challenging students from diverse cultural backgrounds at undergraduate, graduate and executive level, although primarily in graduate programmes (MBA and EMBA) but possibly also in non-degree executive programmes. Additionally, have a genuine commitment to teaching innovation
Be willing and able to work effectively as part of a team of faculty and non-faculty staff at the School and contribute to helping the School and University achieve their strategic goals, particularly in relation to academic excellence
Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills necessary for undertaking teaching and the pastoral care of students
Be willing and able to undertake the full range of administrative duties both within the School and the College
