Adhering to the university motto of “Seek truth, foster originality, and live up to the name of a teacher”, ECNU has made great achievements in talent-training, scientific research, community service and international exchanges. ECNU is working steadily towards its goal of transforming itself into a world-class university and, as of 2025, is ranked 253 according to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.
The Shanghai International School of Chief Technology Officer (CTO) was founded under the leadership of Qian Xuhong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and president of ECNU. CTO school is a new type of education and research entity of ECNU. The school is committed to “realizing the social value of science and technology through the coordinative transformation of talent and technology,” and undertakes the important task of cultivating science and innovation talents driven by national strategic demands. It adheres to the core value of “innovation changes the world” and proposes “management education to meet major challenges.” In the first half of 2021, it established the interdisciplinary field of “SciTech-driven Business,” built a master’s education system in engineering management positioned with “Chief Technology Officer” concentration, and created an executive education system of “science and innovation talent pyramid” composed of technology managers, CTO innovation leadership, science and innovation entrepreneurs, and industrial technology leaders. It aims to become an internationally renowned new type of science and technology business school integrating functions of teaching and education, science and innovation research, technology transfer and commercialization, entrepreneurial services, and government decision-making consultation.
Together with the Asia Europe Business School (AEBS), the School of Chief Technology Officer (CTO) has established China’s first SciTech-driven business discipline, an academically rigorous consortium that integrates science, technology, and business education. This innovative disciplinary framework represents a transformative approach to cultivating interdisciplinary talent equipped for the challenges of a technology-intensive global economy. While the CTO School focuses on developing leaders in scientific and technological innovation, AEBS complements this mission by nurturing globally oriented business professionals with a strong foundation in technological contexts.
Asia Europe Business School was jointly created by East China Normal University, a double first-class construction university in the world, and emlyon business school, a prestigious university in Europe in June 2015. The school implements the national innovation driven development strategy, faces the needs of technological innovation and high-quality development to enhance national competitiveness, deeply innovates professional education, reshapes excellent educational norms, integrates the comprehensive advantages of multiple disciplines of East China Normal University and the business education background of emlyon business school in France, and focuses on cultivating students’ innovation ability and international management ability in the global business environment. The school has now offered undergraduate programs in Business Administration (AI Business track, Innovation and Entrepreneurship track), Master's degree in Marketing (High-end Brand Management track, Digital Marketing and Data Analytics track), Master's degree in International Business (Global Management and China Studies track), Master's degree in Engineering Management (Chief Intelligence Officer track), as well as joint undergraduate and master's programs in China and France and international doctoral programs. The school adopts all English teaching to strengthen the cultivation of work competence worldwide. As of May 2025, students come from 76 countries around the world, with international students accounting for 64% of the total. The school is committed to the development of new business knowledge and has formed the academic research team composed of outstanding talents from world-class universities. Since its establishment, the faculty has published or confirmed to publish 64 scientific research results in internationally important academic journals (SSCI), and published five papers in UTD24 journals recognized by world-class business schools. This is a breakthrough in the development history of the business and management disciplines at East China Normal University. Based on the mainstream business & management knowledge system of the world, it cultivates SciTech-driven business talents facing the new era of AI through cross integration with AI-technology education. Focusing on international talent cultivation, the school has established teaching and practice bases in cooperation with well-known international enterprises, and provides leading management talents with global vision, transnational working ability and social responsibility for serving the national and world market.
