WU is currently inviting applications for the position of a full professor[1] of Organization Studies at the Department of Management. Candidates are expected to have established an international reputation as a researcher in their field. Depending on the candidate’s academic credentials, the employment contract can be concluded either as a permanent employment contract or as a fixed-term employment contract with the option of a permanent extension.[2]

Organization Studies is a diverse and multifaceted research area. It aims at the understanding of organizations as entities embedded in societal contexts. It seeks to understand how these entities are organized and how organizing occurs within these entities. Candidates explore these dimensions from a social science perspective and focus on how organizations and organizing shape and are shaped by societies. Original theoretical contributions to the development of Organization Studies can be achieved, for example, by analysing organizations and organizing from an institutional, process, or practice approach, or from the perspective of other current organization and management theories. The Department is open to strengthening existing areas of research as well as to developing new areas of scholarly expertise. Candidates should have a strong track record of theory-related empirical research in and of organizations, and employ and develop further innovative methodologies and methods in their work beyond the qualitative – quantitative divide.
The successful candidate is expected to have established an international reputation as a researcher as exemplified above, underpinned by an extensive track record of research, and to have the following characteristics (candidates’ qualifications will be assessed under consideration of their academic age):
A solid academic qualification (e.g. PhD, habilitation or equivalent qualification) in management (highly advantageous), alternatively a closely related area
a track record of international experiences
An outstanding international reputation for excellent research based on management and organization theories from a social science perspective An excellent research record with regard to their academic age, especially by
having demonstrated the ability to publish in top-tier journals of the field (especially advantageous also in journals from the WU star-list and the department’s A+ and A lists) and by
regular participation in recognized conferences and workshops in the field of Management (e.g., Academy of Management, EGOS, EURAM);
A record in successfully attracting research funding
Excellent teaching qualifications at undergraduate and graduate levels as well as in executive education
Active participation in the international scientific community and a proven track record of serving the scientific community
Team leadership qualities
Gender and diversity management skills
Well documented activities in the areas of self-governance and third mission;
Ability to teach in German is an advantage; And – in case this is not possible at the start of the employment – a strong commitment to learn German towards an advanced level (CEFR B2) in the first five years is expected, in order to fulfill necessary responsibilities of this position, including teaching, university self-governance, and third mission activities.
